BigBelly Solar Powered Compactor

Officials at Simon Fraser University obtained a BigBelly cordless compactor in February for an environmental project at Verdant, in partnership with Vancity Enterprises.

VANCOUVER Big Belly, the name of the first solar-powered garbage compactor in Canada, is as much a symbol of its gaping trash capacity as it is of the consumer society it hopes to serve, officials at Simon Fraser University say. The high-tech, stand-alone dumpster unveiled yesterday at SFU can compress 10 cubic metres of waste into one-eighth its size, using electricity from the sun and saving fuel and labour costs by reducing the number of times a dump truck has to drive by.
